NMU cancels on-campus events through July

MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University has announced the cancellation of all on–campus events through July, due to the COVID–19 pandemic.

The announcement comes as Governor Gretchen Whitmer extends Michigan’s stay–at–home order, along with the NMU campus being closed because of Michigan’s phased reopening plans.

“Well with the governor’s stay at home order lasting through the end of May, currently NMU is looking at how we would handle summer activities, and we thought making a decision earlier would be better, because it impacts a lot of local families, especially with our Wildcat Youth Camp, and all those sports camps,” said Derek Hall, Chief Marketing Officer for NMU. “And [we’re] really looking at would we be able to return to normal activity June 1, and it just doesn’t look like that’s possible at all.”

Cancellations include all sports clinics and camps, along with recruitment events and visits.

Other events cancelled include Summer College for Kids, Upward Bound Math and Science, Jacobetti Complex career exploration camps, and NMU facility rentals, including the Berry Events Center and the Northern Center.

Events scheduled for August remain on the university calendar; a decision regarding August events will be made in July. Those who have paid for events that have been cancelled will receive a refund.
