Brock “Slim” Strom
ISHPEMING — We have a new segment on ABC10 sports; where we highlight the best athlete to come out of each county in the Upper Peninsula.
Starting in Alger County, is former Air Force offensive tackle, Brock “Slim” Strom.
Strom, better known as Slim according to his profile in the College Football Hall of Fame, attended Indiana University before transferring to the Air Force Academy.
In 1958, he became the Academy’s first All–American. He led the Falcons to an undefeated season, with only one 13–13 tie against Iowa, who went to the Rose Bowl that year, stopping his team from having a flawless season.
However, it should be known that, coming into the season, Air Force was projected to lose that game by 50 points.
Strom has said that he remembers that tie better than any other game because of how little chance everyone had given them.
After his playing career, Strom served in Southeast Asia, and became a decorated pilot with two Bronze Stars, three Air Medals, and two distinguished flying crosses.
Strom was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
