UPDATE:
SANDS TOWNSHIP–A two vehicle accident sent one person to the hospital this afternoon in Sands Township. At approximately 3:00 PM, Troopers from the Negaunee Post were dispatched to a two car crash on M553 near the County Road 480 intersection known as the Crossroads.

The crash occurred when a 2005 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 64-year-old Duane Ruska of Sands Township, failed to yield the right of way when entering onto M-553 from the North side of the Crossroads Mini Mart. Ruska attempted a left hand turn to go North on M553 and drove out in front of a 2005 Dodge Caravan, driven by 55-year-old Mary Albarello-Burbey also of Sands Township. Burby was traveling South on M553 approaching the Crossroads intersection when the crash occurred.

Ruska and Albarello-Burbey were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Albarello-Burbey was transported to UP Health Systems-Marquette for treatment of the injuries she received as a result of the crash. Ruska was determined to be the driver at fault, and was cited for failing to yield the right of way and operating with an expired driver’s license.
