Man prepping to walk across U.P. for cancer
MARQUETTE — A man is getting ready to walk across the Upper Peninsula for the third time in as many years to raise money for a good cause.
A meet and greet was held at the Ore Dock to meet Jake Cherwinski, the man getting ready to trek across the U.P. to raise money for cancer. Cherwinski is the founder of End2End Cancer, a soon-to-be non-profit organization dedicated to helping the fight against cancer. He started the movement in memory of an uncle who passed from the disease. In the last two years, Cherwinski has raised nearly $14,000, but the journey means more than just the financial gain.
“I don’t start a walk and anticipate or think about a number because I don’t necessarily think that’s the most important thing,” said Cherwinski. “Of course we want to raise as much money as possible, but what I’ve found is it’s more about the community, mote about what you’re hearing in the background right now-people getting together and sharing their experiences and having support.”
The money raised on this journey will go to St. Judes, but after the organization is officially a non-profit, Cherwinski says he is hoping to donate the money to help local families. He will start in Ironwood on July 31 and make his way to the bridge crossing in St. Ignace, but typically his journey takes him clear to Drummond Island. The trip takes about a month to complete.
