Exciting sport comes to local state park

GOGEBIC COUNTY — Anyone visiting Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in the near future will be able to have even more fun, especially if you’re into playing a certain type of golf.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says the park now has an eighteen–hole disc golf course. The rules of disc golf are similar to regular golf, but you use Frisbees instead of clubs and balls. Officials say the first nine holes of the course are shorter than the back nine.

The view on the back nine is breathtaking, because those holes are located with a great view of Lake Superior. Sports like these give organizations the chance to interact with others in the community.

Said DNR Public Information Officer John Pepin that he hoped the disc golf would help to bring more value to the park.

“I think it will give people, campers, other visitors to the park,” Pepin said, mentioning that it would be one more thing campers could do at the state park.

Discs are available for rent at the campground store. There is no additional charge to use the disc golf course. All you need is a Recreation Passport.
