Students get caught in 'Marigold Mania'

NEGAUNEE — Every 4th grade student at Lakeview Elementary spent part of their school day planting flowers at Miners Park in Negaunee for their annual Marigold Mania.

Over 100 students got down on their hands and knees to plant the marigolds that they potted at their greenhouse. Marigold Mania has been a positive experience for the students, the Negaunee Beautification Committee, and all who attend the park. The park receives some beautification, and the students receive a sense of pride and ownership.

“These are the kids plants,” said Negaunee Beautification Committee Organizer Anna Mattson, “they’ve had them right from seed. They each planted two, right after Easter. They’ve watered them and kept them growing and then today is the day they bring them all over. I’m not going to do this forever, and neither are the other ladies so when these children get to be the age where they would give back to the community we hope they’ll remember this event.”

This is the 5th year that Lakeview students have helped the Negaunee Beautification Committee at Miners Park. Once they bloom the marigolds will be seen along the edges of the park by Maas Street, US–41, and by the memorial pyramid.
