Trenary prepares for 22nd annual Outhouse Classic

TRENARY — One of the UPs most popular winter traditions is fast approaching, and it’s a little out of the ordinary.

The Trenary Outhouse Classic takes place tomorrow and the city is hard at work with preparations. Competitors will push their homemade outhouses down a 400 foot snow covered track and the three fastest teams will win a cash prize. The outhouses are all unique, with different designs reflecting the team who’s pushing.

“Some of the outhouses that people bring are actually ones that look like they came right out of their backyard or still could be used in their backyard. Some are made out of cardboard and one–by and just fall apart by the end of the race,” said Naomi Cady, Outhouse Classic Committee President.

While the race may seem silly, it has some altruistic intentions. Proceeds from the registration fees go back into the community, funding a scholarship at Superior Central High School, and paying for the 4th of July fireworks. But, one of the main purposes is just to have fun.

“Oh the atmosphere around here is excellent. I couldn’t ask for a better crowd. They cheer and hoot and holler for the whole race, it’s amazing,” added Cady.

Registration for the race begins at 11:30 on Saturday morning, and ends at 1:30. The kids race will start the day at 2:00PM, with a fur hat competition and adult race to follow. Registration is $40 for adult teams and $20 for kids.
