Upper Michigan unemployment numbers

Seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates dropped in all of Michigan’s 17 major labor market areas in March.

The news comes from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. Last month, the Upper Peninsula’s unemployment rate was just under 10 percent, but still higher than the 8.8 percent rate Michigan posted.

Here’s how the numbers break down across the U.P.:

Menominee County was the lowest at 6.4 percent. Marquette and Dickinson came in at just under 8 percent, while Houghton and Gogebic were over 9 percent. Iron, Delta and Luce Counties were over 10 percent, while Chippewa and Alger Counties both hit 11.5 percent.

Ontonagon County came in at 14.3 percent. Keweenaw and Schoolcraft were higher still, reaching the 15 percent mark.

Baraga County registered a rate of 17.9 percent, but the highest unemployment rate, in the not only the U.P. but the entire state, was Mackinac County at 22.5 percent.
