Search continues at Rainbow Falls for missing Wisconsin woman
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Search efforts continue at Rainbow Falls/Black River Harbor area in Ironwood Township for a missing Wisconsin woman.
On the evening of Saturday, July 11th, 22-year-old Stephanie Narvaez of Watertown, WI and 22-year-old Karl Nelson of Milwaukee, WI were hiking in the Rainbow Falls area. Narvaez attempted to cross the Black River just above the waterfall, when she lost her footing and slipped into the river, and she was carried over the falls. Rescue attempts by Nelson were unsuccessful.
The Michigan State Police Dive Team was unsuccessful in locating Narvaez after conducting underwater searches in the area into late Sunday evening. Efforts were severely hampered by the dangerous currents and treacherous underwater terrain. Gogebic County Deputies and Search and Rescue Team members remained on scene this morning, continuing the search.
Assisting deputies in the search include the Michigan State Police, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, USFS personnel, Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team and Beacon Ambulance.
The Rainbow Falls area remains closed at this time.
