Jo-Kay Corral to kick off season with “Experience the Farm” event
NEGAUNEE — The Jo-Kay Corral in Negaunee is kicking off the season with a fun family event.
“Experience the Farm” will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. Participants can get a taste of farm life while getting up close and personal with some of the animals.
“When the families come there’s a lot to do,” said corral owner Jodi McIlhany. “We’ll milk the goat at 10:30 in the morning, then there’s a corn crib where the little ones can climb in and hunt for little eggs in the corn, and we have the farmer’s lookout tower where they can climb up and slide down the slide into a big net underneath. It’s really just a lot of hands-on activities.”
Part of the purpose of Saturday’s event is to give young people a better understanding of farming. It gives them a firsthand look at where much of their food comes from, and it provides them with many unique experiences.
“It’s a wholesome experience,” McIlhany said. “It keeps them off their devices and they can sheer a sheep or things like that that they probably would never otherwise learn or even know about.”
“Experience the Farm” will kick off an entire season of events, lasting through the fall.
