Two snowmobiles collide in Powell Township

POWELL TOWNSHIP — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to an injury crash between two snowmobiles that occurred on Trail 14 approximately 1.5 miles south west of Big Bay, Mi in Powell Township.

The report indicates that two sleds struck each other when they both went around a curve. A 19-year-old man, of Akron, Ohio, on a 2019 Polaris Pro RMK took the curve at too high a rate of speed and side swiped a 2012 Ski Doo 600 MXZ driven by a 52-year-old Muskegon, Michigan man who was on the outside of the curve.

The two snowmobiles collided with both drivers hitting each other’s helmets. The operators were thrown from their sleds and were unconscious for a matter of moments. Both riders had companions riding with them who promptly administered first aid. After a period of time, both drivers were able to drive to Cram’s General Store and met with Powell Township EMS staff who were called to the scene.

Both riders were transported to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. This crash is still under investigation.

A reminder to all snowmobilers, that extreme caution should be used when approaching a curve and any road crossing.
