First Presbyterian Church of Marquette to hold Support Puerto Rico 5k Fun Run this weekend
MARQUETTE — This weekend a local church is hosting a 5k in Marquette.
The youth group of First Presbyterian Church of Marquette is planning to travel to Puerto Rico next summer. The purpose of their trip is to help rebuild whatever they can of homes that were severely damaged by recent hurricanes.
The 5k fun run, which will take place in Lower Harbor Park at 3:00 Saturday afternoon, is a way for the youth group to raise the money they need to travel to Puerto Rico.
“Our 5k is to support a group of 17 youth headed to Puerto Rico in the summer of 2020,” said Kelsey Nordengren, the Christian Education Director for First Presbyterian Church of Marquette. “We are very excited to help the hurricane–devastated island. We are hoping to do construction and help rebuild those devastated houses.”
Nordengren says taking young people on a trip like this is an opportunity for them to experience situations that are new to them, and that it’s also a chance to help others around the world.
“I think it’s super important to involve our youth and have their eyes opened to the world around them and for them to help people in need,” said Nordengren.
If you would like to participate in the fun run on Saturday, registration begins at 2:30 in Lower Harbor Park. The cost to run is $25. A link to online registration and more information can be found here.
