UPDATE: Suspect name released in attempted murder arrest

UPDATE: 4/22/19 4:50 — Keith Carl Craig, 64, of Newberry, was arraigned on Sunday, April 21, 2019 in the 92nd District Court of Luce County on one count of assault with intent to murder, home invasion first degree, and committing a felony with a firearm. His bond was set at $500,000. A probable cause conference is scheduled for May 1, 2019.


NEWBERRY — A man was arrested early Friday morning after breaking into a man’s home and shooting at him.

According to the Michigan State Police, at approximately 7:00 p.m. Thursday, a man contacted MSP troopers near the MSP Newberry Detachment after someone broke into his home.

The man who broke into the home fired several shots at the homeowner and hit him with the gun. The victim was able to escape the home and report the assault to police.

Investigators say the suspect, who is related to the victim, was found at his own home in Newberry around 11:00 p.m. The suspect refused to turn himself over to police.

Troopers and deputies from the Luce County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the MSP Emergency Support Team. EST members negotiated with the suspect for several hours, until he eventually gave up and was taken into custody at around 2:20 a.m. Friday.

Police say no one was injured in this incident, which remains under investigation. The man’s name has not been released.

The MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post troopers were assisted in the incident by MSP detectives, canine officers, EST, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, Luce County Sheriff’s Office and Luce County Emergency Medical Services.
