Alger County man air lifted after snowmobile accident

UPDATE: The Alger County Sheriff’s Office has released an update regarding the man involved in a serious snowmobile accident that happened on January 13.

The operator of the snowmobile is identified as Mr. Todd Cantile (55 yrs. Old) of Rockford MI.

He is still listed as being in critical condition.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind the public that 911 TEXT’s are an option if emergency services are needed in areas where cell phone calls will not go through.


ALGER COUNTY — At approximately 11:10 am on Sunday morning, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a single person snowmobile accident on Trail #8 near Melstrand. Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, and Alger County Rescue “21” were dispatched to the scene.

The investigation concluded that the operator was driving westbound on Trail #8 when he left the trail and struck a tree. The operator was extricated from the scene by Alger County Rescue “21” and transported to Munising Memorial Hospital by Alger County EMS, where he was later flown to UP Health Systems by Valley Med Flight.

Alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be factors in the incident. The incident is still under investigation, and the name is being withheld at this point.
