Fatal crash in Mackinac County leaves one person dead
NEWTON TOWNSHIP — One person dead after a fatal, two-vehicle crash on US-2 at the intersection of M-33 near Curtis.
On Wednesday, August 22, around 3:59 p.m. troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie posts responded to the scene to investigate.
According to police, the crash involved a SUV traveling westbound and a passenger vehicle the was turning east on US-2 from M-33.
The driver of the SUV, a Farmington Hills woman, was transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry and was later released.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was 89-year-old Leta Anna Petosky of McMillan.
Petosky was also transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Investigation shows that Petosky failed to yield to oncoming traffic and pulled into the path of the westbound SUV.
Weather and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash, but the crash is still under investigation.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department, Portage Township EMS, Newton Township Fire Department, Garfield Township Fire Department and Michigan Department of Transportation.
