Superiorland Kiwanis honors Marquette student athletes

MARQUETTE — The Superiorland Kiwanis Club recognized student athletes from Marquette Senior High School Thursday morning at Northern Michigan University.

The ceremony honored over a dozen student athletes that were previously awarded Kiwanis Athlete of the Month throughout the course of the school year. The honorees are chosen each month by their coaches and their athletic director for their hard work on and off the field.

The students had an average GPA of 3.86, and are heavily involved in both athletics and their community.

“There’s a tremendous amount of negativity that goes on in high schools today. We get to hear a tremendous amount of the positive, and that’s fantastic. It is truly heartwarming to hear the positive that’s coming out of our schools today, and there’s a lot of it,” said Neal Crothers, president of Superiorland Kiwanis

Two seniors, Drew Thomas and Stasha Warchock, were also honored with Athlete of the Year. Thomas was honored with Athlete of the Month in February as a member of the alpine ski team.  Warchock is the Superiorland Kiwanis Athlete of the Month in May as a member of the softball team.

Kyle Nystrom, the head football coach for Northern Michigan University, spoke at the ceremony. He told the athletes that no matter what path they take in life, find a way to always make themselves relevant.
