Bark River Winery strives to support local community
BARK RIVER — And we’re back with another Wine Wednesday in honor of Michigan Wine Month.
Northern Sun Winery is a combination of work they have done in the Vineyard. They are the only estate grown winery for miles and miles around the U.P.
Before they even started the winery they have years of experience growing grapes. They don’t make wine they grow wine.
“We import nothing, we are trying to be local agriculture. We work with local farmers to promote their products. We sell local crafts in our winery, all of our wine is grown here on this premice and made in our cellar,” said David Anthony, Co Owner of Northern Sun Winery.
Last fall at the Regional and California competitions Northern Sun Winery brought home some awards.
“We won two gold that put us in best of class competiton and we won best of class for our Marquette Red and our LaCrescent white. One of those in my career and I would’ve been happy, but two in one year. As a wine maker I’m still jumping up and down on that,” Anthony said.
Over the years they have also won gold medals in Indianapolis and New York as well. With summer being their busiest time of year and approaching quickly, they utilize all the help they can get.
“When it comes time to harvest, we have 40 – 50 people volunteer to pick grapes for us and they have become very good friends over the years and we have these events with our pickers such as picnics in the vineyard or wine tastings with different foods. It’s just a lot of fun,” Anthony, added.
