Reviewing codes for blight ordinance
NEGAUNEE — The City of Negaunee is working on making a new ordinance on blight within the community.
The meeting which was open to the public had been hosted at the Negaunee Senior Citizens Center at 6pm. They went over the International Property Maintenance Code 2018 edition (IPMC), which will be the foundation for the new ordinance.
The city board members went over certain codes that will not be applied to the future ordinance due to being unnecessary, but will be revised in the future. The public is urged to come and listen in on these meeting because it might affect certain properties in the future.
“People should come to these meetings because if they don’t their voice won’t be heard,” said, City Manager of Negaunee, Nate Heffron. “In some cases it’s the people who come to meetings make the decisions. So now your property is up there and you are letting somebody else make a decision for your property. So you should be a part of that process in my opinion, and everybody on this board believes in that same philosophy.”
The definition of blight is being determined through the IPMC 2018 edition and the discussion at the meetings. The next meeting on the new ordinance will be on June 25th at the Negaunee Senior Citizens Center at 6pm.
