Ishpeming Township fire being investigated as possible arson

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP — A fire that occurred in Ishpeming Township on Sunday night is being investigated as a possible arson.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a fully engulfed structure fire at #99 Sunny Side Estates in Ishpeming Township just before 7:30 p.m. Officers had been at the same location earlier in the afternoon for a verbal domestic situation between a boyfriend and a girlfriend.

After the situation, the parties were separated by law enforcement. The male subject left home for the day, while the female subject remained at the residence. Investigators say that the female subject made suicidal-type comments in the early evening hours, about 30-45 minutes before the fire began.

Upon arrival to the fire, officers found the female subject unconscious in the garage. She was transported to UPHS – Marquette for the treatment of smoke inhalation, as well as probable drug and alcohol consumption.

The incident is being investigated as possible arson, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Ishpeming City Fire Department, Ishpeming City Police Department, UPHS – Bell EMS and Rescue 131 assisted on the scene.
