Alger County Community Collaborative and two new businesses partner for sweet fundraiser
MUNISING — The Alger County Community Collaborative is partnering with two new Munising businesses for a fundraiser they’re calling Sweets for a Purpose.
Lake Superior Sweet Shoppe and Cathy’s Flowers at 109 Cherry Street are providing Valentine’s Day treats to continue funding the social worker for Alger County schools. Through fundraising efforts and support from Munising, Superior Central and Burt Township schools, the county was able to hire a social worker to support the needs of students last year.
“We are trying to keep her on board because we know she’s in need and our students do need her,” said Bobbi Ayotte, an executive member of the Alger County Community Collaborative.
“She’s highly skilled, she’s connecting well and we’re getting really great feedback from the schools,” added Mary Jo O’Halloran-Torongo, the Communities that Care and Alger County Community Collaborative coordinator.
As for the fundraiser, Cathy’s Flowers is contributing flower arrangements either loose wrapped or in a vase, and Lake Superior Sweet Shoppe is providing chocolate covered strawberries, donuts, Oreo truffles and cupcakes, all made from scratch.
“We really believe in everything that they stand for,” said Jennifer Lester, owner of Lake Superior Sweet Shoppe. “We really love kids and we want to see kids happy and be successful.”
“It’s for a wonderful cause, something that is there, but needs to continue,” said Cathy Weymouth, owner of Cathy’s Flowers.
The fundraiser runs until February 14th. You can find more information and an order form on the Alger County Community Collaborative Facebook page.
