ALGER COUNTY — A fatal snowmobile accident occurred in Alger County, Sunday, at around 1:00 PM, on a trail 1-mile west of M-94.

Officials concluded in their investigation that Jason Craig Bashor, a 34- year -old from Maryland, and Shaena Leigh Hicks, 34-year-old from Virginia, were traveling west on Trail Number eight when they failed to maneuver a curve and  struck several trees.

Bashor was pronounced dead on the scene after sustaining multiple traumatic injuries. Hicks was transported to Munising Memorial Hospital for injuries.

The cause of the accident is being attributed to excessive speed and lack of experience in operating the snowmobiles. Alcohol is said not to be a factor.

Response personnel include Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger EMS, Alger Rescue, and Michigan State Police.
