Prisoner arraigned on first-degree murder charge

MUNISING — The prisoner accused of killing his cellmate at the Alger Correctional Facility in July was arraigned Tuesday morning.

Deshawn Madden, 23, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rodriguez Montez Burks, 23. Madden and Burks were cellmates at the prison when the murder occurred around 2:00 p.m. July 20th.

Madden is currently being held at the Marquette Branch prison. He’s already serving time for three crimes out of Wayne County, including armed robbery.

First-degree murder in Michigan is automatically life in prison without the possibility of parole. Madden is due in court for a preliminary exam September 29th.
