Students at local school create offensive sign against rivalry

WAKEFIELD — A superintendent from a local high school is apologizing over an offensive sign created by the students.

At Tuesday night’s boys basketball between Wakefield-Marenisco High School and Bessemer High School, cheerleaders created a sign that read, ‘hey Speed boys get ready to leave in a trail of tears!!.’ Since the game, this sign has been shared on social media displaying people’s outrage and anger towards the sign.

According to the Superintendent of Wakefield High School Catherine Shamion, no faculty or staff saw the sign before it was held by the cheerleaders. The sign was created quickly before the game for the basketball players to run through. Shamion claims that there was no malicious or racial intent to the sign, which is why the cheerleaders will not receive any punishment for creating it.
