Local radio station running third year of non-stop Christmas music
MARQUETTE — With Thanksgiving over, the Christmas spirit has officially taken over. And what’s a better way to get in the holiday cheer than 24-7 Christmas music?
The Gift 106, Marquette County’s home for non-stop Christmas music, is operated by Great Lakes Radio in Marquette.
The tunes start jingling around November first of every year and carries cheerful spirits through the New Year. Artists both young and old are featured in this festive mix.
“We went through the full library of Christmas songs that we have and we ended up picking out the best versions of those songs,” said Station Manager, Luke Noordyk. “We’ve got the old ones like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole and Anne Murray all the way up to new songs like Pentatonix and Mariah Carey. And then there’s some country mixed in as well.”
The station is just three years old and was inspired by the families love for the holiday.
“My wife is a Christmas fanatic. She loves it. It’s her favorite holiday and she loves Christmas music as well,” Noordyk said. “We always played Christmas music in the house and our family is full of musicians we we’re always playing or singing songs so we thought we’d bring that to the Marquette County community and across the U.P.”
At the top of every hour on Christmas Eve this year, a reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas will be played. This commercial-free station is also live streamed on their website.
