Black Ice Comics, new comic book store opens
HOUGHTON — The city of Houghton is welcoming their first ever comics book store. ABC 10’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Rick Allen has the story.
There’s something new lurking underneath the parking deck in Houghton. There have been sightings of hulking green monsters and mysterious caped crusaders. Black Ice Comics is the city’s newest store and the first of its kind.
Black Ice Comics Co-Owner Shana Porteen said, “I was surprised that there wasn’t a full-service comic shop and the reception we’ve had has been ‘We’ve been waiting our entire lives for this to happen in Houghton!’ and, so it’s just been our pleasure to be able to bring this to the community.”
Both Laura and Shana have backgrounds in higher education…though Shana comes with a lot experience in comics…her family owning a store in Oklahoma.
Porteen said, “I have a sign in my front porch at home that says, ‘Making a Life is More than Making a Living,’ and I decided to kind of start believing in that; and, so as friends, we decided together that we would pursue a different path and so we just kind of walked away from one passion and right into another one.”
Black Ice Comics is holding their Grand Opening on Saturday during Free Comic Book Day…with door prizes…picture taking opportunities and a free comic.
“They have over 12,000 comics to choose from and if they don’t have it, they can get it for you. Oooh, I’ve been looking for this one!”
