Survey highlights importance of protecting the Great Lakes

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A majority of Great Lakes basin residents surveyed believe protecting the lakes is highly important.

That’s according to a survey conducted by the International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Water Quality Board. Almost 4,000 residents from across eight states were surveyed, with 85 percent feeling it is important to protect the lakes from threats like pollution and aquatic invasive species. Most respondents believe this protection should be for the benefit of fish and wildlife, as well as the economic significance of the Great Lakes to the region.

Officials say the survey will provide a valuable tool to the IJC for working on collaborative strategies to protect the Great Lakes. A panel discussion on the board’s findings will be held in Washington, D.C. on Monday.
