Kids rewarded for reading with a carnival
ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP — Students at Aspen Ridge Middle School started their Spring Break early Thursday by celebrating the end of Reading Month with a spring carnival.
Spring carnival has been around for nearly twenty years in the NICE District. Each year brings a new theme and this year was the year of the cat; ‘Cat in The Hat’ that is.
The PTO has been working tirelessly since October to surprise the children and show them how much fun school can be.
“This year we did go with Dr. Seuss because it’s reading awareness month and because we distinctly tried to tie it into our reading awareness month . They read over 114,000 hours of reading in March. The kids absolutely love it. From the youngest ones, our playgroup families come, all the way to our fifth graders.”
This year featured a clown making balloon animals, bounce houses, a DJ dropping some dancing tunes, face painting and staff members dressed up as famous Doctor Seuss characters.
Trina Cline said, “That’s a hard question. I like a lot of books. I really like Averie Vial.”
“My favorite series of books would be Dark Diaries,” said Mykeira Brown, “I like Junie B. Jones. I like Junie B. Jones, Amazing Mysteries, and I don’t know, I like chapter books,” Cline added.
Over 30 volunteers turned out to help at the carnival and help show that reading is fun.
