Thrill rides, acrobatic animals, and a new Queen at local fair
HOUGHTON — Thrill rides, acrobatic animals, and a new Queen.
The Houghton County Fair is now in its second day. The fair got off to a terrific start yesterday with the improved weather and a nice opening day crowd came out to enjoy the $1 rides.
Five young ladies competed in the Houghton County Fair Queen Pageant.
Contestants performed in the talent portion of the event then appeared in their evening gowns to answer a question. After all the scores were tallied up…the winner was 16-year-old Alexis Aho of Calumet.
Alexis has been battling a condition known as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (P.O.T.S), but that only served as extra motivation to do well.
Aho said, “When I was in the hospital for a month at Mayo, my mother said if I did not miss a day of school, which was really hard for me because I only went to school twice a week, she said I could do this competition.”
For those looking to spend their time outdoors, there’s plenty to do and see at the fair. Marvelous Mutts put on an entertaining show of dogs doing tricks and catching Frisbees.
Or you can sit back and watch the horse riding competitions.
And of course, there are the rides. Rides cost extra but most everything else, including the Monster Truck Show Saturday night, are including in your admission. The fair runs through Sunday.
