DNR close to opening new boat launch
ISHPEMING — Access to a popular fishing spot in Ishpeming will be a whole lot easier at the end of the month.
Construction of a boat launch site at Lake Angeline is scheduled to wrap up Aug. 28. The Department of Natural Resources has been working on the project now for about a month.
The $90,000 project includes a paved boat launch path, a brand new dock, and better access to some of the best fishing in the U.P.
“This is going to open up a lot of new fishing opportunities for people in the area, especially people who live close to the city,” said John Pepin, the Deputy Public Information Officer for the DNR. “It’s going to remain a very quiet boating and fishing area. The department is planned a two tiered fishery, with lake trout on the bottom and the top will be bass and more warmer water species.”
“There’s a lot of private property around the lake and getting to the lake without trespassing on private property was a bit of a problem. Now with this boat launch, that problem will be resolved,” said Mark Slown, Ishpeming City Manager. “The DNR has really ran with the ball. They’re the ones to be thanked and praised for this great project.”
The DNR is in the preliminary stages of securing funding to pave the site’s parking area.
