Modern engineering meets historical accuracy for school construction

ISHPEMING — As the upcoming school year is approaching its start, some summer construction is coming to an end for one school district.

The immense renovations and improvements to the Ishpeming Middle School and the Ishpeming High School are coming to fruition. Once everything is completed, the schools will have the efficiency of modern engineering with the styling and historical accuracy from 85 years ago.

“It’s really neat to see the high school building as it would have appeared when it was first built in 1930,” said Business Manager Anthony Bertucci, “the windows really enhance the look of the building. We’re just excited that the community has and continued to support it’s schools. This project really highlights that. We’ve taken an already great school system and are trying to enhance it even more.”

The auxiliary gymnasium will remain as the temporary cafeteria until renovations for the new one are completed, which is expected to be in February. Other than that the students shouldn’t expect any changes in their school day.

“We plan to have all of the student occupied spaces ready for the start of school. During the school year we’ll just be working on the cafeteria and kitchen addition.”

Historical chandeliers will overlook from the high ceiling in the commons area. A staircase will be neighbored by a new elevator that will allow handicap access to the 2nd floor of central for the first time.
