Law officers police snowmobile trails
SENEY — Law enforcement officers got together over the weekend to help prevent injuries on snowmobile trails.
The effort began on Saturday and focused on trails surrounding Seney and Shingleton. Officers were looking for violations such as operating while intoxicated, excessive speed, careless operation and riders not wearing helmets. Officers also assisted trail users who were stranded due to mechanical problems and those in need of directions.
Over eight hours, officers made 450 contacts, conducted 46 stops, gave 35 verbal warnings, issued 9 citations and arrested two riders for operating while intoxicated on a snowmobile. No injuries or crashes were reported.
Nine officers participated in the project, including those from the Schoolcraft County Sheriffs Department, Luce County Sheriffs Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, and St. Ignace Post of the Michigan State Police.
