NMU professor writes petition to remove Andrew Jackson from $20 bill
MARQUETTE COUNTY — A Northern Michigan University assistant professor wants to make a major change to a piece of U.S. currency.
Dr. Martin Reinhardt teaches Native American studies. He’s written a petition to remove President Andrew Jackson from the $20 bill and replace him with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Loading ...“Andrew Jackson was a bad man,” he said. “Let’s remove this Indian killer, this slave owner, this person who’s seen nonwhite people in our society as subhuman, and let’s replace him with someone who is a genuine hero.”
Dr. Reinhardt recently posted the petition on the White House’s website. It’s collected more than a thousand signatures since he did that. He hopes 100,000 people will sign it by January 6th.
“(If the petition collects 100,000 signatures,) it empowers the President to take action on it,” he said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a specific action. It just empowers him to do something, and that may be to mobilize whatever agency to address it. It may be that they end up not doing it, but at least they now have the voice of the people. The process is supposed to be about government by the people, for the people.”
