Marquette will host Michigan Municipal League convention

MARQUETTE — Hundreds of local elected officials from across Michigan will visit the U.P. in three weeks for a statewide convention.

The Michigan Municipal League has chosen to hold its annual convention in Marquette. It’ll take place on October 15th, 16th and 17th. Local leaders will learn about entrepreneurship, urban planning, economic development and other topics.

“We’ve had a committee working (on the convention) for probably almost a year now,” Marquette mayor Bob Niemi said. “The Convention and Visitors Bureau, Northern Michigan University, our staff liaison, the DDA, a number of different players (are part of the committee).”

Most of the events will take place at Northern Michigan University, but there will still be chances before and during the convention for the visitors to make their way around town.

“One will be a tour of Presque Isle,” Niemi said. “During the breakout sessions, there’ll be some downtown tours, waterfront tours. It’ll be a time for people from lower Michigan to visit Marquette and see a little more of Marquette.”

There’s also a reception for the guests at the Ore Dock Brewing Company on the 15th.

Marquette has hosted the convention three times before, most recently in 2006.
