5K run/walk to benefit Marquette warming shelter
A student group at Northern Michigan University is organizing a 5K to help a Marquette organization.
Every spring the Student Nurses Association hosts a charitable event. And this year, the group decided to sponsor a 5K for the Room at the Inn’s warming shelter in Marquette.
SNA had its psych community rotation at Room at the Inn, and wanted to give back even more to those in need.
“The room at the in deals with the homeless which is impacted greatly by psychiatric mental illness, and it’s a community association,” SNA member Sally Keskey said. “These people at Room at the Inn are part of our community—it’s our responsibility to take care of them and doing this (psych community) rotation has really taught us that.”
“Sally and I are from Marquette and being from Marquette we’ve never really been exposed to this population,” SNA member Courtney Schramm said. “I think it’s really important that their part of our community as well and we need to do everything we can to help them—especially this winter has been so cold, so just getting them off the streets.”
“That’s why all the funds that we raise are going to the warming shelter.”
The 5K is April 5 at 9 a.m., with early registration starting at 7:30. The race starts at the University Center on NMU’s campus.
Cost is $20 per person at $17 for families.
