Public comment sought in restoration project at Pictured Rocks

Two public scoping sessions have been scheduled by the National Park Service in regards to the Sand Point revetment at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The NPS is looking for input on a coastal restoration project that will reassess prior shoreline stabilization actions at Sand Point. Erosion damage to the current rock revetment and the desire to explore alternatives that would allow natural shoreline processes prompted the service to take action.

The service is conducting the sessions to inform and involve the public in the planning process by providing a forum for individuals to ask questions and give comments on the project. The first session will be held at the Burt Township Community Center in Grand Marais on March 19th and the second will be at the Alger County Heritage Center in Munising on March 20th. Both public meetings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m.

NPS staff will brief the public on their objectives and allow time for questions and comments. Individuals can also submit comments on written forms available at the meetings, or via mail or fax.
