RadioShacks in the U.P. safe from closure for now
An electronics chain may be the next in line for a series of closures.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RadioShack is planning to close 500 of its 4,500 stores in the months to come.
The majority of the nine Upper Peninsula locations appear to be safe at the moment.
The Ishpeming, L’Anse, Newberry, Manistique, and Munising RadioShack outlets say as far as they know, they will not be closing. The Ironwood location, which is a franchise store, will not be affected either.
Managers say that only corporate-owned stores, which are generally found in malls, are subject to such closures.
The RadioShack in the Westwood Mall in Marquette Township recently renewed its lease for another year, so it will remain open for the foreseeable future.
Officials at the Sault Ste Marie location said they could not discuss the issue, and when ABC 10 spoke with the Escanaba store, they referred the station to RadioShack’s corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.
When questioned about the potential closures, officials at headquarters said, “RadioShack’s policy is that the company does not comment on speculation or rumor.”
