Teaching Family Homes continues to serve youth

Teaching Family Homes of Upper Michigan has been serving the community for more than three decades. It has become the largest private welfare organization in the Upper Peninsula. Teaching Family Homes gives children an opportunity to enjoy their childhood.

“We’re a community; this is our youth’s home,” Teaching Family Homes director of public relations Rich Rossway said. “What we try to do is provide them with real-life experiences of what a typical child would enjoy. They come from abuse and neglect. Their environment may not have been a very positive one.”

The impact has been a positive one on the children. They understand that a troubled past doesn’t necessarily dictate what their future can hold.

“I have learned to accept the negative consequences,” Teaching Family Homes community member Blake Bossche said. “Because when you accept a negative consequence it is always going to be better in the future. You may have a rough day, but it is a new day tomorrow.”

With Christmas being the season of giving, Teaching Family Homes will be reaching out to the community. The agency is in need of volunteers and donations for its Adopt-A-Child Christmas gift program.

“Most people want to help during Christmas,” Rossway said. “I can’t think of a more worthy organization than Teaching Family Homes and being able to provide a real, wonderful Christmas experience for our kids.”
