U.P. Company continues to expand
A Lake Linden company is moving ahead with plans to build a copper stamp-sands processing facility despite missing out on a state grant.
Greensands Corporation had submitted a bid for a $500,000 grant from the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition but the award went to another company last week.
Company founder and Michigan Tech grad Domenic Popko said the money would have been helpful, but not getting it won’t slow them down.
Popko said his company will create jobs immediately for the area, beginning with 36 hires this year.
But that’s just for starters. Popko says this venture could open a whole new industry in the field of shingle manufacturing for the Keweenaw and bring even more jobs.
Popko said the name Copper Country Shingles had a nice ring to it. So do the words “Help Wanted”.
