One dead, One arrested in Weekend Accident
A 53 year old man was killed in a single vehicle accident early Saturday morning and the driver of the vehicle was arrested. According to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s office, Jeffery Paul Brusso of Allouez Township died as a result of his injuries. He was a passenger in a 2006 Pontiac G6 driven by David Paul Simons, age 38, of Calumet.
The accident occurred on the 5 Mile Point Road near Farmers Block Road in Allouez Township shortly after 1 a.m.
Authorities say Simons failed to negotiate a corner, ran off the roadway, hitting an embankment and trees. He allegedly left the scene of the accident and is charged with “leaving the scene of an accident causing death”, a 15 year felony. Simons is currently lodged in the Keweenaw County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
Further charges are being reviewed by the Keweenaw County prosecutor’s office. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident. The accident remains under investigation by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s office.
Assisting in the incident, troopers from the Calumet Post of the Michigan State Police, Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Laurium Police Department, Keweenaw County Medical Examiners and Mercy Ambulance.
