Baraga County Poisoning May Have Killed Bald Eagle

State and federal agencies are looking into wildlife poisoning in Baraga County that may have included a bald eagle.

A Keweenaw Bay Indian Community conservation officer recently found a deer carcass and a dead bald eagle within close proximity of each other.

The exact location where this happened isn’t being released.

The deer carcass had been laced with a substance containing blue crystals.

The KBIC told the DNR, and the DNR called in the Environmental Protection Agency.

The EPA found that the deer had been salted with a highly toxic pesticide.

Test results on the bald eagle haven’t come back yet.

The DNR, the EPA and the U.S. Forest Service are among the agencies investigating the case.

Bald eagles have been on the federal endangered species list since 1940.
