Vajda resigns from city manager post

MARQUETTE — The city of Marquette will soon be looking for a new city manager, after Bill Vajda turned in his letter of resignation Friday morning.

Vajda has been the city’s manager since 2010. Marquette Mayor Mike Coyne told ABC 10 that the city will hold a special meeting Tuesday to appoint an interim city manager while they look for Vajda’s replacement.

Mayor Coyne had nothing but good things to say about the job that Vajda has done in his five years as city manager.

“He has really done a lot, particularly to make Marquette more connected with the state of Michigan,” said Coyne. “It’s amazing the connections we now have with Gov. Snyder’s cabinet and all the departments there. I think they feel that Marquette is a star of Michigan and they are. We’ve done really well in the past five years and much to his credit.”

Vajda’s last day as city manager will be Oct. 5. According to Vajda’s office, he was unavailable for comment today.

Mayor Coyne added that he thinks Marquette Police Chief Mike Angeli will be appointed interim city manager while the city looks for Vajda’s replacement.
