Michigan House passes controversial landline phone bill

A controversial bill to make it easier for phone companies to eliminate landline phone service has passed the state House.

Senate Bill 636 passed by a 71-39 vote Tuesday afternoon. It would allow phone companies to eliminate landline service anywhere in Michigan that they choose on 90 days’ notice, beginning in 2017.

All four state representatives with districts in the Upper Peninsula — Democrats John Kivela and Scott Dianda, and Republicans Ed McBroom and Frank Foster — voted no.

ABC 10 will have more on this story on Wednesday’s newscast.
