UPDATE: Cyclist dies after colliding with pickup

The names of those involved in the fatal accident over the weekend have been released.

The deceased bicyclist was identified as 41-year-old Dwayne Kaukola of Ishpeming. The driver of the pickup truck was 29-year-old Matthew Isola of Champion.

The accident is still under investigation.

ELY TOWNSHIP — One person is dead after a pickup truck collided with a bicycle Sunday afternoon in Ely Township.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post say the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on US-41 near County Road CZ in the Greenwood location. The victim was riding a bicycle against traffic along the edge of the highway. Without warning, troopers say the cyclist entered the roadway into the path of the pickup. The driver of the pickup was unable to avoid the bicycle.

The cyclist died at the scene as a result of his injuries. No further information will be released until the victim’s family has been notified. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Ely Township First Responders, the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Ishpeming City Police, and UP Health System EMS.
