A home in Chocolay Township was damaged by an early morning fire that started in the attic.

Firefighters from the Chocolay Township Fire Department say they were called to the house at 366 Lakewood Lane shortly before 6:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed fire originating in the attic making its way up through the roof.

“Our first teams made entry into the house. We were able to make access into the attic, knock the fire down,” said Chocolay Township Fire Department Fire Chief Gary Johnson. “It took about fifteen minutes, twenty minutes, and we had it under control.”

The blaze started in the attic above the kitchen. Johnson says that it appears to have been electrical in origin, but it will take further investigation to determine the exact cause. There were no injuries reported in the incident.

“The homeowners were awoken by the smell of smoke. They got out of the house and called 911, and we arrived (a) short time thereafter,” added Johnson.

Firefighters removed insulation that was recently installed in the attic to make sure that there was no further fire. The roof, kitchen, and living room areas were extensively damaged, and the remainder of the structure sustained smoke damage.

The Chocolay Township Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Marquette Township Fire Department, Sands Township Fire Department, and Marquette General EMS.
