Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry to distribute food at Marquette Salvation Army on February 13

MARQUETTE — Food insecurity is unfortunately a problem that many families face across the country. The Salvation Army of Marquette is holding an event on Thursday, February 13, to help some of those families in our area.

The Feeding America of West Michigan’s Mobile Food Pantry will be available to anyone in need of food from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. About 15,000 pounds of food will be available for free, including non-perishable items, fruits, and vegetables.

Salvation Army Captain Doug Winters says that the Mobile Food Pantry is just one of the many ways the organization is helping to feed people in need in Marquette County. He also says that they are expecting a big turnout on Thursday.

“It’s especially important this time of year,” said Captain Winters. “Food continues to be a problem across our county. To be able to hand out this much food at one shot just supplements all the other things that we do. This is just another opportunity to get food into peoples’ hands. We don’t want people to be suffering from food insecurity. So we’re asking the clients who come to just bring a sturdy box or a couple sturdy bins, because we expect to be delivering a lot of food.”

The Sault Chippewa Tribe and the Kewadin Casinos paid for the Feeding America truck to come to the Marquette Salvation Army, and the Noon Rotary and Boy Scout Troop 361 will be volunteering at the event. Captain Winters says that they have more of these events planned in the coming months, and any volunteers are welcome.
