Career styled speed dating event promotes careers to students

MARQUETTE — A local high school held a career style speed dating event today to help get students thinking about the future.

Sophomores at Marquette Senior High School were able to spend 9 minutes at 9 tables representing different occupations. Some of these occupations included health sciences, industrial and construction technologies and even culinary among many others.

Representatives from NMU, trades representatives and industry leaders were introducing these different possible careers throughout the event.

“Well it looked like they were really excited to get here,” said Jim Yates, Career Technical Consultant for MARESA. “I know they were waiting at the doors to get in and it looks like they are engaged and having a good time. So that is what we kind of hoped for. It’s a great way to present a lot of information in various occupations in a short amount of time.”

The students thought it was beneficial that they got a chance to look into different opportunities.
The students were also excited to hear about other educational opportunities that are offered early in high school through CTE and the Marquette-Alger Technical Middle College.

“I think it helps a lot with our future,” said Tommy Blemberg, Sophomore at Marquette Senior High School. “So we can look at different options that we have and different plans so I think it’s good.”

“I think that it is super duper cool,” said Trinity Burdick, Sophomore at Marquette Senior High School. “I think it helps a lot when you look at Middle College and you are looking to get extra credits for college. Its also beneficial when learning about the field that you might want to go into.”
