NMU hoop house to sell produce
MARQUETTE — It may already be one of their colors, but Northern Michigan University is going Green. The school’s hoop house is now one of Marquette’s local vendors, selling produce to Dining services as well as around the community.
It’s just another cog in the wheel moving towards organic and natural sciences.
“It’s really a great thing for student because they have access to fresh locally-grown food that was literally grown less than a mile away from where it is being served,” said Rachel Ochylski, Student manager for the hoop house.
You, too, can be a part of the cause. The NMU hoop house is always looking for donations, but these donations don’t need to be monetary. In fact, what they want is what you can’t wait to get away from your house.
“One really easy way to get involved is by donating your food scraps. We have a compost system just outside of the hoop house,” said Ochylski.
Once it has decomposed, it is ready to be used as soil for the next project. You can also volunteer for the weekly harvests at the hoop house. There’s even an incentive for you.
“And then the volunteers can go home with as much produce as they want after helping us out,” said Ochylski.
