Armed man crashes car after high speed chase

IRON MOUNTAIN — A Kingsford man is being treated for injuries after a high-speed pursuit ended in a crash Tuesday morning.

Officers from the Iron Mountain Police Department say they were dispatched shortly after 5:00 a.m. to the report of an intoxicated man armed with a rifle who had left the area of Burger King on US-2 in a red pickup. Veterans Administration Police Officers spotted the truck a short time later in the area of McDonald’s driving recklessly. The driver reportedly entered the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center parking lot where he continued to drive recklessly. He then headed behind the hospital, backed into a secluded area, and shut off his lights and engine.

Police were approaching the vehicle with their emergency lights activated when the suspect fled the property, heading east on US-2. A high-speed chase ensued from Iron Mountain, south on US-141 into Niagara, Wisconsin. The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle went out of control, struck a power pole, and rolled.

The suspect, a 32-year-old Kingsford man, was taken into custody. Police say he is receiving treatment for what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The rifle was recovered at the scene of the crash.

A formal report will be forwarded to Dickinson County Prosecutor Lisa Richards for review and the issuance of formal criminal charges. Iron Mountain Police were assisted by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsford Public Safety, and the Veterans Administration Police Department.
