Casperson firearm records bill is signed into law
Governor Rick Snyder has signed a package of bills into law that will make Michigan firearm records confidential.
Senator Tom Casperson wrote Senate Bill 49, one of the bills in the package. The bills would amend the state’s handgun licensing law to say that firearm records will be exempt from Freedom of Information Act requests.
The records will be available only to law enforcement agencies and only under certain conditions:
- the person poses a threat to himself or herself or other people;
- the person’s firearm was used during the commission of an offense with the firearm that violates a state law, a law of another state or a federal law;
- or to ensure the safety of a law enforcement officer.
Casperson introduced Senate Bill 49 in January.
