Celebrate Finnish Independence in the Copper Country

For those of you Yoopers with a Finnish background, you can celebrate your heritage in the Copper Country during Finland’s Independence Day. A long-standing tradition will take place Wednesday Dec. 6th at 4:00 P.M. at the Finnish American Heritage Center. The event will include a performance by the Kivajat Dancers, musical selections by pianist Kathleen Alatalo Arten, and a message from Finlandia Foundation National, the new proprietors of the Heritage Center. As part of the event, the Finnish Theme Committee, of the City of Hancock, will announce the 2024 Hankookin Heikki. The chosen honoree will preside over the Heikinpaiva festivities – which take place over several days in January. The program is expected to be about one hour and there is no admission charge, but donations are greatly appreciated. The observance of Finland’s Independence Day marks the 105th consecutive time the Copper Country has marked the occasion.
